FAQ ‘s

What does being a Limited Company mean?

Having ‘limited liability’ status means it is a company in its own right. Because a Limited Company is a distinct entity from its owners, it may be a little easier for a company to secure business loans and investment. A Limited Company may also benefit from tax advantages.

How much tax do Limited Companies pay?

The current rate of Corporation Tax for Limited Companies is 19% and you pay that on your total profits (minus allowable business expenses). Limited Companies do not have to pay Income Tax or National Insurance. If you are unsure about what tax you need to pay, please get in contact with us.

How much tax do I pay on dividends?

You pay 8.75% on dividends for basic rate taxpayers (up to £37,500 on top of the personal allowance for the 2022/23 tax year). 33.75% on dividend income between the higher rate threshold (£37,501) and the additional rate threshold (£150,000). 39.35% on dividend income above the additional rate threshold of £150,000.

What is the difference between being Self-employed and a Limited Company?

A Limited Company has a separate legal entity from its shareholders and directors, whereas the business and personal affairs of someone who is self-employed people is treated ‘as one’ for tax purposes.

How much does it cost to become a Limited Company?

It costs £12 and can be paid by debit or credit card or via your PayPal account. You will also need at least 3 pieces of personal information about yourself, your shareholders or guarantors. Eg: telephone number, national insurance number & passport number. Your company is usually registered within 24 hours. If you do not want to use ‘limited’ in your company name you must register by post. Instructions on how to register your company can be found on HMRC’s website.

Should I start a Limited Company?

One of the biggest advantages of running your business as a Limited Company is that you can legitimately pay less personal tax than a sole trader. Limited Company profits are subject to UK Corporation Tax, which is currently set at 19%. As a sole trader, your entire income is subject to NIC rules.
